Alex took a bite of his sandwich and watched Jamie bite into his own with gusto. He was tired and looking forward to crawling back into bed, but thoughts were sifting through his mind now that he was awake again and eating. It was a quirk of his; he always thought best while he was eating, like the simple act freed his mind to sort through things he didn’t normally have time for.

“You’re staring at me,” Jamie said and raised a brow at Alex. They were alone in the little dining room for which he was grateful. He wasn’t sure he was ready to be surrounded by other shifters just yet, and Alex was unnerving him a little with his gaze.

Alex smiled and shook his head. “Sorry. Just thinking.”

“About?”

“You.” Alex took another bite and narrowed his eyes a little as he looked around the room. “Me. The way we’re…reacting to each other. I’m not complaining but…it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense.”

“Yeah, I noticed,” Jamie set his sandwich down and propped his chin on his hand to look at the other man. “Duke said our…our beasts had chosen each other.”

Alex nodded. “He said ‘mated’.” He looked at Jamie with a frown. “I’m not sure I like the idea that we…that you aren’t…making your own decisions where I’m concerned.”

“Dude,” Jamie kicked him lightly under the table. “I’m not saying that the level of…I don’t even know what… that I feel for you is completely normal, but trust me, I’m runnin’ the show in here.” He tapped his head. “Don’t start getting neurotic on me after the earth-moving sex we just had.” He smirked. “I plan on having it again.” Jamie yawned and smirked. “Tomorrow.”

Alex had to chuckle at that and nodded; he was satisfied for the moment that he wasn’t unintentionally ravishing the younger man. “I think maybe this whole shifter thing has just taken what was already there and…amped it up somehow.”

“Do you like me?” Jamie asked, suddenly feeling a bit insecure. “I mean you don’t know much about me, and I sure don’t know a whole lot about you. What if the way I gargle irritates the crap out of you?”

Alex laughed aloud. “I think I can handle it.” He sobered a little then. “I did have a report on you. It wasn’t much, more rap sheet than biography.”

Jamie’s face tightened a little, and he looked down at the table. “What did it say?”

“About you personally? Not much. Mother deceased, father estranged, and you’re an only child, raised in the system after you were fifteen.”

Jamie gave a derisive snort and leaned back in his chair. He wasn’t sure he liked that his life could be summed up so simply and sound so…normal. “Nice.”

Alex watched his face, seeing the ghost of some old pain, and he hurt for him. He pushed the remains of his sandwich away and stood, moving around the table to pull a chair next to Jamie and sat. “So tell me what’s not there,” he said quietly and leaned a little so their shoulders touched.
